What is Cat 5 cable?

Category 5 cable is commonly known as Cat 5. Designed for high signal integrity this cable uses solid core telephone wires, instead of stranded, and includes 4 pairs (8 wires) of unshielded* twisted wire. *Many of the cables are unshielded but some are shielded.
